World Environment Day was on the 5th of June and is the largest global platform for environmental outreach, encouraging awareness and protection of the environment. De Grey celebrated on-site with a visit from Rick Tonello, the Chief Astronomer at the Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory. Site-based crews enjoyed an educational laser tour of the night sky and several hours of stargazing through a setup of three telescopes. Rick also visited Port Hedland primary and high school, teaching the students about the galaxy and viewing the sun through a specialized solar telescope.
The Perth office celebrated with a visit from Animal Ark, a wildlife education and training center who also work with wildlife rescue groups in the Perth region. Kurt and Shannon presented an educational and interactive session on mammals and reptiles, encouraging staff to learn about our local native wildlife in the Perth and Pilbara regions, whilst also having a chance to get up close and meet some of our most shy and elusive animals.
The activities encouraged staff to learn about and appreciate the natural world around us and the unique surroundings that we have on site.
